Bali is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Southeast Asia — warm, welcoming and endlessly varied. But travelling with children here is smoother when you know a few local tricks. This guide isn't about what to do (for that, see our full guide to things to do in Bali with kids) — it's about how to do it well: getting around, beating the heat, packing smart, planning by age, and keeping everyone happy and safe.
Getting Around with Kids

Bali's traffic is the single biggest thing to plan around, especially in the busy south. A few essentials:
- Use Grab and Gojek. These ride-hailing apps are cheap, reliable and far safer than driving an unfamiliar scooter with children. Both offer car options with room for a family.
- Allow far more time than the distance suggests. A "20-minute" drive can easily take an hour at peak times (late morning and around sunset).
- Cluster activities by area. Plan your days around one neighbourhood to avoid long, fractious car journeys.
- Bring your own car seat if you can. They're not standard in most Bali vehicles, so families travelling with babies and toddlers often pack a lightweight one.
Beating the Heat (and the Rain)
Bali is hot and humid year-round, with a wet season roughly from November to March. To keep kids comfortable:
- Go out early. Mornings are cooler and calmer — ideal for outdoor activities and beaches. Save the midday heat for pools, lunch or rest.
- Sun protection is non-negotiable. Hats, high-factor sunscreen, light clothing and plenty of water.
- Have a rainy-day backup. Tropical showers are usually short but intense; covered or indoor-friendly options keep the day on track. See our guide to rainy day activities for kids in Bali.
What to Pack for Kids
A few Bali-specific extras make a big difference:
- Reef-safe sunscreen and after-sun
- Mosquito repellent suitable for children, and anti-itch cream
- A light rain poncho (handier than an umbrella with kids)
- Swimwear, water shoes and a quick-dry towel — water play is everywhere
- A small first-aid kit, plus any regular medicines (some can be hard to find locally)
- Refillable water bottles — stick to bottled or filtered water
Planning by Age

Matching your days to your children's ages keeps everyone happy:
- Toddlers (0–5): calm beaches, soft play, short outings around nap times. See our guide to toddler activities in Bali.
- Young kids (5–9): playgrounds, water parks, animal parks and gentle cultural experiences.
- Older kids & teens (10+): surf lessons, snorkelling, bigger water slides and active adventures.
Eating Out with Kids
Bali makes dining with children easy. Many cafés and restaurants are genuinely family-friendly, with kids' menus, high chairs and play areas. Local dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice) and mie goreng (fried noodles) are mild and usually a hit — just ask for less spice. The south is full of healthy, international and Indonesian options, so even picky eaters are covered. A park like Mookiland's restaurant, where kids play while parents eat, takes the stress out of mealtimes entirely.
Budgeting for a Family Trip
Bali suits every budget. A few tips to keep costs sensible:
- Many of the best things are cheap or free — beaches, rice field walks, temples and markets.
- Eat local. Warungs (small local eateries) offer delicious, inexpensive meals the whole family can enjoy.
- Look for family passes and memberships at attractions you'll revisit — they often pay for themselves quickly.
- Travel in shoulder season for better prices and thinner crowds.
Staying Safe
Bali is generally very safe for families. The main things to watch are the sun, the traffic and the sea — many famous beaches have strong currents, so stick to calmer ones with young children and always supervise closely. For a fuller rundown, see our guide: Is Bali safe for families?
Enjoy Every Moment
With a little planning around the heat, the traffic and your children's ages, Bali is a wonderfully easy place to travel as a family. Keep days relaxed, leave room for the unexpected, and you'll come home with the kind of memories that last.
